How to Use the Word Guess Solver
What This Tool Does
Enter what you already know about a 5-letter word puzzle (which letters are right, which are close, and which are wrong) and this tool searches its dictionary for every word that could possibly fit.
The Three Colors
Gray means the letter isn't in the word at all.
Yellow means the letter is in the word, but in a different spot.
Green means the letter is correct and in the right spot.
Handling Repeated Letters
If your guess has a letter twice and only one comes back colored, the solver knows the answer contains that letter exactly once, not zero times and not twice. Most simple solvers get this wrong.
Too Many Results?
Add more letters and set more colors to narrow the list. The more tiles you fill in, the fewer the matches, and the more accurate they are.
Word Guides
Getting the most out of the solver
The tool is most useful two or three guesses in, once you have real constraints to feed it. Entering a single grey letter will return most of the dictionary; entering two greens and three greys usually returns a handful you can read at a glance. If you would rather keep the puzzle intact, look at how many candidates remain rather than reading the list. That number alone tells you whether to spend your next guess gathering information or committing to an answer.
