Words With Two Vowels
All 5,089 five-letter words with exactly two vowels, the single most common vowel-count pattern among valid 5-letter words.
Why the vowel count matters
Most five-letter English words carry exactly two vowels. That single fact is worth more at the grid than any list of clever openers, because it tells you what shape to expect before you know a single letter.
When you have confirmed one vowel and are stuck, the useful question is usually not which consonant is missing. It is whether a second vowel is hiding in a position you have not tested.
Where the second vowel tends to sit
In two-vowel five-letter words, the vowels are rarely adjacent and rarely both at the edges. The overwhelmingly common shapes put them in positions two and four, or two and five, which is worth remembering when you are deciding where to place a letter you know is present but misplaced.
If a clue tells you there is an A somewhere and position two is already ruled out, position four is a better bet than position one purely on frequency.
The letters that pair up
Certain vowel pairs dominate. A and E together account for a large share of two-vowel words. O and E, I and E, and A and I follow. Pairs like U with O are comparatively rare, which means a clue confirming a U narrows things faster than a clue confirming an E.
This is why a guess that confirms or eliminates a U is worth more than its frequency suggests, even though U is an uncommon letter.
Using this against a stuck grid
The practical routine is straightforward. Take the vowels you have confirmed, take the ones you have ruled out, and scan for words on this list that match. Because you already know the answer almost certainly carries two vowels, that scan is far shorter than working through every possibility.
Or skip the scanning and put your clues into the solver, which does the same filtering exhaustively. The list is here for learning the patterns; the tool is here for when you just want the answer.
A note on Y
Y is counted as a consonant on this page. That is a choice, not a rule. In words like STYLE and TRYST it is plainly doing vowel work, and a player thinking about pronunciation would count it.
Counting it as a consonant keeps this list focused on the case it is meant for: words with two of A, E, I, O and U. Words leaning on Y are a separate pattern worth knowing separately.
